Flaubert's first epileptic seizures are reported to have taken place in the years 1843/44, when Flaubert was 22. One can assume that the "epileptic crises" had a lasting effect on the poet's mental stability and his social behaviour.

""My active life ended at the age of 22. [...] I have nerves which leave me no peace."

Flaubert's nervous condition was recognised by many contemporary physicians as being epileptic in origin, not least by his father, Dr. A.-C. Flaubert, who was an experienced doctor, respected by patients and colleagues alike.
